EL’s annual Vision Luncheon provides an excellent vehicle for our members and guests to network and catch a glimpse into the future of Downtown Houston. Past speakers have included Mayor Annise Parker, U.S. State Representative Ellen Cohen, Mayor Bill White, and humorist Kinky Friedman, among others.

This year, we are very pleased to announce that our guest of honor and speaker for this year’s Vision Lunch will be the City of Houston’s Director of Sustainability, Laura Spanjian. She will be discussing her plans for “greening” Houston, and the important role Houston’s Young Professionals will play.

Members interested in the scholarship must:

(1) Complete the Leadership Houston application.
2) Draft a cover letter of no more than two pages detailing your involvement in EL, and why you think you are a good candidate for the scholarship.

The application and cover letter must be returned to Melissa Fitzgerald (Melissa@downtownhouston.org) no later than 5pm on February 14, 2011. The winner will be announced at the Emerging Leaders Vision Lunch on March 2nd.

The annual Chevron Houston Marathon is Sunday, January 30 and it needs your help! This year’s race will be the largest one ever. EL will be manning the 6.5 mile water station and you are invited to join the fun. It’s an early morning (5:15 am) and will require about three and a half hours of your time, but it is a great way to support the city of Houston and the dedicated runners. Hi Everyone!

I hope your New Year is off to a great start! I would like to personally invite you to an event the Houston Downtown Alliance Emerging Leaders is hosting to start the year off—Resolve to Get Involved. Resolve is a happy hour and donations drive (see below) to benefit Loaves & Fishes Soup Kitchen, and it is taking place next Thursday, January 13, at 6pm at Massa’s Seafood Grill, 1331 Lamar Street. The first quarter (post-holiday spending frenzy) is always lean on donations for all charitable organizations. L&F, in particular, is hit by the double-whammy of slower donations and weather that makes the meals and shelter L&F provides all the more critical. So Emerging Leaders is kicking off 2011 by helping to make sure L&F has the resources it needs to continue caring for Houston ’s homeless. The event will be a lot of fun, good conversation, and diverse networking. Guests will enjoy an appetizer buffet, featured wines, and Joe Massa will be offering dinner specials for any guests who want to stay for a meal, with a portion of the proceeds going to L&F. There is no cost to attend, but all donations for L&F are appreciated.

If you are able to attend, we would love to have you join Emerging Leaders at Resolve to Get Involved! The event is open to anyone, so please feel free to bring friends.

Donations for L&F:

•TIME—volunteer to help serve lunches; a sign-up sheet will be available at the event
•GIFT CARDS—if you got cards for Christmas you know you’ll never use, why not donate them? L&F can also use gift cards to Sam’s Club, Walmart, Target, or any local grocery store
•TOLIETRIES—Miryam’s Hostel (L&F’s overnight women’s shelter) always has a need for all kinds of toiletries (shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, etc.), and L&F also hands out travel sized toiletries to people whenever they can
•CLEANING PRODUCTS—L&F needs dish soaps, laundry detergents, and other household cleaning products
•LINENS—Miryam’s Hostel needs towels, washcloths, linens (twin size) and blankets
•MONETARY—A representative from L&F will be present to accept checks payable to Magnificat House, Inc., the non-profit that runs Loaves & Fishes; unfortunately, we cannot accept cash for L&F
